By speeding through the valley of ashes, it shows Gatsby does not want to face his past and by the police excusing his speeding, it shows how he is allowed to forget his past by the arrogance of the upper class. His lies about his life were believed in a large sense by the citizens but Nick did find them contridicting and strangely not convincing. I thought Nick was going to be the one to break the barrier that Gatsby has on reality.
